First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel des Balances on Weinmarkt, you immediately understand why this four-star property gets such incredible location scores. I mean, you’re literally standing in one of Lucerne’s most picturesque squares, with the Reuss River flowing right beside you and those famous medieval buildings creating this almost fairy-tale backdrop. The hotel itself occupies several historic buildings that have been beautifully restored — there’s something really satisfying about staying somewhere that feels so authentically Swiss without being kitschy about it.

The Heart of Old Town

What strikes me most about staying here is how you’re genuinely in the thick of everything that matters in Lucerne. Chapel Bridge is basically a two-minute stroll, and you can walk to Lake Lucerne in about the same time. But here’s what I really appreciate — despite being so central, the rooms don’t feel like you’re sleeping above a tourist trap. The Weinmarkt area has this lovely residential feel in the evenings when the day-trippers head back to their tour buses. Couples absolutely love this spot (and honestly, I can see why), but it works just as well if you’re here solo or with friends.

The Rooms

I’ve got to say, they weren’t kidding about those beds — I actually slept better here than I have in some five-star places. The rooms vary quite a bit since you’re dealing with historic buildings, but that’s part of the charm. Some have these wonderful river views, others look out onto the cobblestone square. The decor strikes this nice balance between traditional Swiss elements and modern comfort. You know what I particularly liked? The bathrooms are genuinely well-designed, not just pretty — good water pressure, decent storage space, all those little things that matter when you’re actually living in the space.

Morning Fuel

The breakfast setup here is surprisingly well thought out. They do a proper buffet with all the Swiss classics — excellent breads, local cheeses, really good coffee — but they also offer breakfast to go if you’re planning an early start for Mount Pilatus or somewhere. I found myself lingering over breakfast most mornings, partly because the food was good, but mainly because starting your day looking out at the Reuss River while planning your Lucerne adventures just felt right. The staff seemed to understand that breakfast is part of the whole experience, not just fuel for the day.

What really sets Hotel des Balances apart is how it manages to be both incredibly central and genuinely comfortable. You’re not sacrificing anything by staying in the old town — the beds are excellent, there’s private parking available (which is actually a big deal in central Lucerne), and the service feels personal rather than corporate. It’s the kind of place where you can duck back to your room between sightseeing without it feeling like a trek, grab a quick shower, and head out for dinner knowing you’re already exactly where you want to be. For a four-star hotel in such a prime location, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for without any unpleasant surprises.
